Michelle McDowell Smith is a Jacksonville, FL native, now living just south of the city in St. Johns, Florida. In the spring of 1997 she graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a major in illustration and minor in art history. As a young illustrator Michelle fell in love with the use of symbols and metaphors to help convey emotion and meaning. Now, as a painter and mixed media artist, those skills remain an integral part of her art.
Michelle's current body of work is titled, *Of Land, And Sky, Whimsical and Free*. She strives to have the pieces offer a connection that is universal yet still convey a fresh look and allow for the unexpected. Her process uses acrylic paint and mixed media materials such as, handmade papers, stamps, sewing patterns, maps, and pages from books. She constantly tries to stay creative and fresh with the materials she uses; however, she is also very aware of the importance of creating an archival work which will stand the test of time.
